The population pyramid of India is undergoing a shift with the number of the elderly steadily increasing and the number of youths declining due to increasing life expectancy and a dip in fertility. The proportion of youth (aged 15 to 29 years)the to total population rose from 26.6% in 1991 to 27.9% in 2016 and is now on a declining trend and is expected to reach 22.7% by 20The proportioning of elderly (aged 60 and above) rose from 6.8% in 1991 to 9.2% in 2016 and is expected to rise further to 14.9% in 2036 today. Yes, we are approaching an aging society. The number of old age homes is also increasing, from around 500 in 2016, the number was around 728 in 2021, growing at a CAGR of 8%.
If current trends continue, we will have 1000 such dwellings by 2025. In addition, 6% of the elderly live alone, without the support of family or friends. They are living alone in their residences.
